Gaining publicity.

Talk about the development, features, and game-play of Salvation Prophecy.

Gaining publicity.

Postby Kaesho » Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:53 am

While I'm sure people who are interested in this game have been spreading talk about it to others in hopes of it gaining popularity, I can think of two ways to get some major publicity for this game via youtube big-names.

First off we have Totalbiscuit with his WTF series which are entertaining, informative and is watched by many. Requesting him to do a wtf is of this game would certainly gain it a big boost in publicity and sales from people who would have otherwise not looked at this game.
Example of his work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_36SSx0i ... AAAAAAAOAA

Secondly, we have the yogscast which were a major factor in minecraft's rise to popularity. Getting them to do a video of playing this game would be sure to gain an enormous audience to view this game.

Getting even one of these two to do a video on Salvation Prophecy would undoubtedly spread word of this game like wildfire and there are plenty more major players on youtube than just these two. Another youtuber id like to see play and review this game would be ZeitgeistReview who always gives an honest opinion on the games he reviews.

Thanks for writing up your thoughts, Kaesho!

Totalbuscuit is excellent. And hilarious. :) He's definitely on my list of reviewers to send an evaluation copy out to. I haven't heard of yogscast before, but I'll definitely look into it.

One of my techniques is to google for reviews of other space games. I'll send out review copies to everyone who seems interested in the genre. Any other suggestions you have are appreciated!

I once watched a great presentation by a game journalist, who said that for indie games you should wait until the game is released before you send it out for review. This is because:
1. Reviewers are probably more interested if the game is released
2. Ideally, you want people to see a review, then be able to buy the game immediately if they're into it. If they need to wait days, weeks, or months, they'll probably forget about it and you've lost a sale.

The negotiations with game distributors is going more slowly than I'd hoped. On the bright side, it's given me time to do some extra testing and fix up a handful of playability, graphics, and balance issues. Hopefully I'll have more news soon!

Far as I know, TB enjoys scifi style games quite a bit since hes done alpha/beta videos for Space Pirates and Zombies and Starfarer, I know from watching his videos I bought SPAZ as soon as it was available and will buy Starfarer when it is as well.

As for the yogscast, they're an eccentric and humorous bunch who started out doing comedic videos for world of warcraft plus a few other games before gaining a massive following from their minecraft series.

Watching them play also got me into minecraft as well heh.

There is a way for you to get a review + sales while still working out bugs and such via Desura's alpha funding where people can buy and play the game all the while putting out reviews and helping find bugs and balance issues.

Sucks to hear the acquiring a distributor is going slowly but patience is a virtue. Looking forward to any and all news here!

I agree this game should have more publicity. Many worse games have more activity on the forums. TB is a great idea. Another reviewer for PC games I like is James Allen at Out of Eight, at www.outofeight.info.

another thing with waiting for release before trying to gain publicity is oh so loved hype that has been so common for some new games made by big developers which forces even more people to pirate the games to try them before buying
and lets be honest after hearing so much about how stupid Mass Effect 3 endings are who would play the game? EAs PR department did their best to make everyone buy the game BEFORE anyone new how it ends :D i think people will be afraid to buy games now...

Thanks for the link. I watched the first video - pretty entertaining. Who knew standing inside a dark block-hut could be so fun? ;)

Yeah - the lack-lustre website, plus lack of a marketing push has limited the visibility of the game.

I emailed one website / graphic artist this weekend whose work I really like. We'll see if he gets back to me, and if I can afford his rates.

Thanks for the "Out of Eight" link.

Agreed. It's even worse if your game doesn't offer a demo.

I just read this, which is pretty amusing:
Fan filing FTC complaints against EA after Mass Effect 3 ending

I wouldn't say the ending is stupid, its just very very subtle and easy to miss. Which is great imo.

This video explains the ending very well and pretty much confirms in my mind that there'll be DLC for an actual ending which should be free. But won't happen cause EA, or an entirely new game.
Either way, Mass Effect isn't over.

Well, I'm one of the few who thought the ending to the Sopranos TV show was actually really cool. Although that took some time, at first I was like, wtf? Endings are funny things. A lot of people are very unhappy if things aren't perfectly resolved and tied up in a neat little bow.

I'd bet money that everyone will get their resolution and happily ever after.
They'll just have to pay and additional 19.99 for it =P
